Contemporâneo dos impressionistas, o pintor francês Henri Fantin-Latour [14 Janeiro 1836 – 25 Agosto 1904] teve um percurso mais romântico através dos temas florais, naturezas-mortas, retratos familiares e de intelectuais da época. A obra do período simbolista ‘La tentation de saint Antoine’ – 1897, pertence ao Petit Palais em Paris.

This work is a résumé, in the form of a still life, of the artistic influences on Auguste Renoir’s early career. The print hanging on the wall is an etching by the leader of early Impressionism, Édouard Manet, of a painting hanging in the Louvre by the 17th-century realist painter Diego Velazquez. The print, along with the objects arrayed on the table—the bouquet of roses wrapped in crisp florist’s paper, the Asian fan and vase, and the leather-bound books—strike a tone of fashionable modernity.
Embora no início da década de 1870 Claude Monet [14 Novembro 1840 – 5 Dezembro 1926] vivesse preferencialmente em Argenteuil, viajava frequentemente para a sua terra natal Le Havre, na Costa da Normandia. O Museu de Belas Artes, tema desta obra de 1873, foi destruído durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial.
